Professor Kuo was a friend and colleague of mine at Cornell University. I would like to recount the transformation of his attitudes toward the application of science which occurred at about the time he decided to return to China. His interests had been in the most abstract mathematical aerodynamics with little apparent concern for their practical significance. However after his decision to return he developed a lively interest in all kinds of practical questions. It was dramatic evidence of his determination to serve the Chinese people. I was very much impressed by his patriotism and his versatility.
